Changing the Story of Ugandan Coffee

Ugandan coffee has long carried the reputation of inconsistency. With Uganda Elgon, we invite you to discover a different story — one rooted in quality, transparency, and long-term impact. This coffee is produced in collaboration with Mountain Harvest, a Ugandan exporter and producer that is redefining what coffee from Uganda can be.

Mountain Harvest works directly with around 2,000 smallholder farmers across Mount Elgon, the Rwenzori Mountains, and Kisoro. Founded in 2017 by a team of young Ugandan coffee professionals and development workers, the organization was created with a clear mission: to build a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable coffee sector, where farmers are not merely surviving, but truly thriving. Their approach centers on deep farmer engagement, hands-on support, and a strong focus on quality — finding solutions for coffee at the source, by the source.

A key pillar of Mountain Harvest’s work is gender inclusion, which is central to this particular coffee lot. In Ugandan coffee production, women often perform up to 70% of the manual labor — planting, picking, processing, and sorting — yet they remain underrepresented in leadership, decision-making, and trade. Mountain Harvest believes that transforming Ugandan coffee means transforming the role of women within the supply chain.

In 2022, Mountain Harvest launched a comprehensive Gender Inclusion Strategy in partnership with a local nonprofit. This strategy focuses on four areas: promoting gender equality within their own organization, offering technical training and extension services adapted to women’s realities, supporting community-driven initiatives, and improving access to financial resources. Because Mountain Harvest’s staff comes from the same communities they serve, these initiatives are deeply rooted and highly effective.

The results are tangible. Since 2017, the share of certified women farmers has grown from 13% to 39%, women now make up over half of Mountain Harvest’s management team, and more than 100 women involved in hand-sorting coffee have gained access to savings groups and microfinance. Women producing exceptional coffees also receive additional quality premiums.

Uganda Elgon is a reflection of this work: a coffee shaped by care, inclusion, and professionalism. In the cup, expect fresh blackberry notes, sweet carrot, black tea, and a soft apricot sweetness. By choosing this coffee, you’re not only enjoying a vibrant and elegant Mount Elgon profile — you’re also supporting a more inclusive future for Ugandan coffee.
