Sunset in a cup
Rooibos is gaining popularity all over the world for its soft flavour and antioxidant qualities. In its birth country, South Africa, people have been drinking it for a long time. Because of its red colour they started calling it rooibos, which means red forest. Rooibos cannot be compared with any other tea or infusion, it has a unique flavour and a beautiful colour, reminding us of an African sunset! We have a classical Rooibos, but also some aromatized variants for those who like to try something new!
Rooibos
The bush grows in the cedar mountains in the western part of the country. These mountains, where the temperature never drops below zero and can get up to 48°C, form the perfect surroundings for its cultivation. Harvesting starts when the bush is 1,5 years old but the plant yields the most tasteful tea between its 3rd and 7th year. After the bush has been cut down, the twigs are cut into 4-millimetre pieces and then flattened. These flat needles are spread out in the sun and sprinkled with water. Because of the extreme temperatures the tea starts oxidizing, a process during which the green needles get their distinct red colour. The last step is pasteurizing the needles in steam of 90°C.
